Overview
Scomber scombrus, Atlantic mackerel, is a small, oily fish and one of the most concentrated dietary sources of long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) by weight, generally providing more omega-3 per serving than salmon. It is inexpensive relative to other fatty fish and widely available fresh, frozen, smoked, or canned.
Active compounds and evidence
Mackerel typically provides on the order of 2 g or more of combined EPA and DHA per 3.5 oz (100 g) cooked serving — among the highest of commonly eaten fish. It’s also a good source of vitamin D and vitamin B12, and, being lower on the food chain than large predatory fish, generally carries a more favorable mercury profile.
- Cardiovascular evidence: as with other fatty fish, mackerel’s EPA/DHA content supports the same body of evidence behind dietary guidelines (e.g., American Heart Association) recommending roughly two servings of fatty fish weekly for cardiovascular health, primarily through triglyceride-lowering and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
- Small oily fish vs. large predatory fish: mackerel (the small Atlantic species, distinct from king mackerel) sits favorably on the “eat more” side of FDA/EPA fish consumption guidance, unlike king mackerel, which is on the “avoid” list for pregnant people due to higher mercury.
Safety and contraindications
- Species matters for mercury: Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) is considered a low-mercury choice and is listed among “best choices” in FDA/EPA seafood guidance; this is distinct from king mackerel, a much larger, longer-lived species that is high in mercury and specifically advised against during pregnancy. Consumers should check which mackerel species they’re buying.
- Histamine/scombroid poisoning: mackerel belongs to the fish family prone to scombroid poisoning if not stored at proper temperature after catch — this causes a histamine-related reaction (flushing, headache, GI upset) and is a food-safety/storage issue rather than a nutrient concern.
- Sodium in canned/smoked forms: canned or smoked mackerel can be high in sodium; people managing blood pressure should check labels and consider rinsing canned fish or choosing lower-sodium options.
- Blood thinners: as with other omega-3-rich fish, very high intakes or concentrated supplements may have a mild antiplatelet effect; food-level consumption is not typically a concern.
