Overview
Salmo salar, Atlantic salmon, is one of the richest common dietary sources of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Unlike most plant oils, which provide only the shorter-chain omega-3 ALA, fatty fish like salmon deliver EPA and DHA directly, which the body otherwise has to convert from ALA at a low and variable efficiency.
Active compounds and evidence
A typical 3.5 oz (100 g) cooked serving of salmon provides roughly 1–2 g of combined EPA and DHA, though the exact amount varies meaningfully by whether the fish is wild-caught or farmed, and by species and season.
- Cardiovascular health: EPA and DHA are among the most consistently evidence-supported nutrients for cardiovascular benefit — they lower triglycerides, and dietary guidelines (including the American Heart Association) recommend roughly two servings of fatty fish per week for the general population, partly on the strength of this evidence.
- Neurological and inflammatory effects: DHA is a major structural fat in brain and retinal tissue, and omega-3 intake has been studied for anti-inflammatory effects via eicosanoid pathways, though clinical trial results for specific conditions (e.g., depression, cognitive decline) are mixed.
- Wild vs. farmed: wild salmon generally has a somewhat different fat profile and is typically leaner overall, while farmed salmon (which dominates the retail supply) often has a higher total fat content, including omega-3s, due to feed composition — both are reasonable dietary sources of EPA/DHA.
Safety and contraindications
- Mercury and contaminants: salmon is generally low on the mercury-risk scale for fish (much lower than large predatory species like swordfish or king mackerel), making it a reasonable choice even for pregnant or breastfeeding people per FDA/EPA fish consumption guidance, within recommended weekly servings.
- Blood thinners: very high-dose fish oil supplementation (not food-level fish intake) can have a mild antiplatelet effect; people on anticoagulants taking concentrated fish oil supplements should discuss dosing with their clinician.
- Farmed salmon and PCBs: some studies have found higher levels of certain persistent organic pollutants in farmed salmon versus wild, though levels in commercially sold salmon are generally within regulatory safety limits.
