Overview

Matcha is a powdered green tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves that are shade-grown for the last few weeks before harvest, steamed, dried, deveined, and stone-ground into a fine powder. Because the whole leaf is consumed (whisked into water or milk) rather than steeped and discarded, matcha delivers a more concentrated dose of the tea leaf’s compounds per cup than a typical brewed green tea. Ceremonial grade (young, first-harvest leaves, smoother and sweeter) is traditionally whisked with hot water alone for Japanese tea ceremony; culinary grade (later harvest, more bitter) is used in lattes, baking, and smoothies.

Active compounds and evidence

Matcha contains catechins (including EGCG), caffeine, and L-theanine, an amino acid relatively concentrated in shade-grown tea. Because caffeine and L-theanine appear to interact — L-theanine may soften the jittery edge of caffeine while both contribute to alertness — matcha is often described as producing a calmer, more sustained energy than coffee, though rigorous head-to-head human trials specifically on matcha (versus green tea extract generally) are limited. A typical serving of matcha (about 1 gram of powder) supplies roughly 35–70 mg of caffeine, comparable to or somewhat higher than a cup of steeped green tea, since the whole leaf is ingested.

Because matcha is whole-leaf, it does deliver more total catechins per cup than steeped green tea, and the general evidence base for green tea catechins — supportive but not conclusive associations with cardiovascular and metabolic health — applies. Claims of matcha having “137 times more antioxidants” than steeped green tea originate from a single older in-vitro comparison and should not be treated as an established multiplier for health benefit in humans.

Safety and contraindications

  • Caffeine load: Because the whole leaf is consumed, matcha can deliver more caffeine per cup than steeped tea; people sensitive to caffeine should start with a small amount (about ½ teaspoon).
  • Pregnancy: Caffeine content should be counted toward the recommended pregnancy limit of roughly 200 mg/day.
  • Heavy metals: Because tea leaves can accumulate lead and other trace metals, and matcha involves consuming the whole leaf, choosing tested/reputable brands is reasonable, particularly for frequent, high-volume consumption.

How it’s typically prepared

Sifted matcha powder is whisked (traditionally with a bamboo whisk) into hot (not boiling) water until frothy; culinary grade is often blended into steamed milk for a matcha latte.
