Açaí, Goji, Maqui & Exotic Berry Hype: ORAC, Anthocyanins & Marketing vs. Science

A clear-eyed look at exotic 'superfood' berries — açaí, goji, and maqui — what the evidence actually supports, and why the ORAC score was retired.

Overview

Açaí (Euterpe oleracea, an Amazonian palm fruit), goji/wolfberry (Lycium barbarum, used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries), and maqui (Aristotelia chilensis, from Patagonia) are frequently marketed as “superfoods” at a premium price. They do contain notable phytochemicals, but the marketing claims often outrun the evidence, and cheaper, local berries typically deliver comparable nutritional value.

Active compounds and evidence

  • Açaí pulp is rich in anthocyanins and monounsaturated fat (oleic acid), and is low in sugar relative to other fruit. Most commercial forms are freeze-dried powder or frozen pulp/purée, since fresh berries spoil quickly and don’t travel well.
  • Goji berries are notable for zeaxanthin (a carotenoid associated with eye health) and polysaccharides that have been studied for immune-modulating effects, though most human trial evidence is still preliminary and often industry-funded.
  • Maqui berry has one of the highest measured anthocyanin (delphinidin) concentrations among common berries and has been studied for anti-inflammatory and blood-sugar effects, but the evidence base is smaller than for well-studied fruits like blueberries.

On ORAC scores: the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity score, once heavily used in superfood marketing, is an in-vitro chemistry assay that does not reliably predict biological antioxidant effects in the human body. The USDA removed ORAC values from its nutrient database in 2012 for this reason. A high ORAC number on a product label is a marketing figure, not a clinical claim.

Practical comparison

Local, familiar berries offer similar or overlapping benefits at lower cost and environmental impact: blueberries and blackberries for anthocyanins, raspberries for ellagic acid, cranberries for proanthocyanidins, and aronia (chokeberry) for some of the highest anthocyanin concentrations of any temperate fruit. Frozen local berries are a practical, sustainable, year-round alternative to imported exotic powders.

Safety and contraindications

  • Goji berries can interact with warfarin (altered bleeding time has been reported in case reports) and with some diabetes and blood pressure medications — patients on these should check with their prescriber before regular use.
  • Exotic berry powders and juices are often sold with unverified health claims; look for products with third-party testing given past reports of adulteration in some goji and açaí supply chains.
