“Liver function tests” (LFTs) are a standard blood panel that includes several distinct markers. AST and ALT are enzymes released when liver cells are damaged or inflamed; ALP and GGT rise mainly with bile duct or bile flow problems (cholestasis); bilirubin reflects how well the liver processes the breakdown products of red blood cells (elevated levels cause jaundice); and albumin, along with prothrombin time (PT/INR), reflects the liver’s protein-making and clotting-factor synthesis capacity — a marker of overall liver function rather than just cell injury. A physician interprets the pattern of these results together, not any single number in isolation, to determine whether a problem looks like liver-cell damage (hepatocellular), bile-flow blockage (cholestatic), or a mix of both.

Why This Matters for Nutrition

Several LFT markers are directly influenced by diet and lifestyle. Alcohol intake, rapid weight changes, high-sugar or high-fat diets linked to fatty liver, and even severe malnutrition (which lowers albumin) can all move these numbers.
